Ann Durbin, a former U.S. GLOBEC SSC member, passed away in July 1995 following a long and courageous struggle with cancer. Paul Smith, a long-time friend and colleague, spoke of Ann's influence on the oceanographic community and his remembrances of her at our October SSC meeting at the University of Rhode Island, where Ann was on the faculty until her death. Paul recalled how Ann held her work to the highest standards, and expected no less of others; she was critical of less than excellent work. Her "toughness" and "thoroughness" will be missed by her friends and by the ocean science community.
